- The National Fire Protection Association says that interconnected smoke alarms provide
the best protection. Interconnected smoke alarms are hard wired and connected in
series at each level of the home, and if one goes into audible alarm, they all do.
These devices are most important in larger or multi-storey homes where the sound
from a distant smoke alarm may be reduced to the point that it may not be loud enough
to provide proper warning, especially for persons sleeping. These devices can be
hard wired by a licensed electrician and they also have a battery back-up feature
- Not only do we require smoke alarms at every level of our home and outside each
sleeping area, but we also need to develop a home fire escape plan. We must teach
our children what a smoke alarm sounds like and teach them how to escape the home
before a fire occurs. We also need to establish a meeting place outside, at the
front of the home and teach our family members to go there and stay there so that
everyone knows that all family members got out safely
- In today’s homes there is an abundance of plastic and synthetic materials and these
materials cause fires to burn hotter and faster than ever before. Therefore, we
only have seconds to escape our home, so make sure a smoke alarms are mounted at
the ceiling, at every level of the home and outside each sleeping area. Test your
smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button and replace the batteries twice
a year – change your clock, change your battery
- A nuisance alarm is a smoke alarm that accidentally activates – usually because
of cooking practices or steam from the shower and too often the response from the
homeowner is to remove the battery or shut off the breaker, therefore leaving you
and your family without protection. (very dangerous) The homeowner should either
relocate the smoke alarm or purchase a smoke alarm with a “hush” feature and a button,
when pressed will silence the alarm for several minuted and then re-set itself automatically.
